Correct Installation of Forged Steel Check Valves

Correct Installation of Forged Steel Check Valves

Jan 29, 2024

Forged steel check valves come in two body-cover connection designs: one with a bolted body cover and the other with a fully welded body cover. The bolted body cover design features a bolted connection with a gasket seal, allowing for easier maintenance. On the other hand, the fully welded body cover design ensures a leak-free seal with welded connections.

Here are essential guidelines for the correct installation of forged steel check valves:

Valve Disc Types:
1. For swing check valves, the valve disc is disc-shaped and rotates around the axis of the seat. This design is suitable for low-flow and stable-flow conditions.
2. The disc shape can be categorized as lift, needle, or ball, chosen based on specific application requirements.

Installation Considerations:
1. Swing check valves with a disc rotating along the vertical centerline should be installed in horizontal pipelines.
2. Fully welded swing check valves can be used in high-pressure, small-diameter applications, providing a leak-free solution.

Valve Operation:
1. Swing check valves utilize a hinge mechanism, allowing the disc to freely move in response to fluid flow. The disc opens when the fluid flows in the forward direction and closes to prevent backflow when the fluid stops.
2. Proper orientation during installation is crucial, ensuring that the direction of fluid flow aligns with the arrow marked on the valve body.

Preventing Water Hammer:
To minimize water hammer effects, especially during flow stoppage or reversal, swing check valves are designed with different disc forms such as single-disc, double-disc, or multi-half-disc.

Additional Installation Tips:
1. Do not subject check valves to heavy loads in the pipeline. Large check valves should have independent support to avoid the influence of pipeline pressures.
2. Ensure that the direction of fluid flow aligns with the arrow marked on the valve body during installation.
3. Vertical lift check valves should be installed in vertical pipelines, while horizontal lift check valves are suitable for horizontal pipelines.

By adhering to these guidelines, the correct installation of forged steel check valves can be ensured, maximizing their efficiency and preventing issues such as water hammer.
